Here’s another way to measure how things stack up in Louisville in comparison with other cities: how far your paycheck goes.
That’s what Glassdoor, a jobs website, figured out to compile its “25 Cities Where Pay Goes Furthest” list. And Louisville’s right there at No. 10.
Glassdoor compared a city’s median base salary to its median home value to come up with a cost-of-living ratio. It also reported the number of open jobs in each city on the list.
No. 1 Detroit, for example, has a cost-of-living ratio of 50 percent; its median base salary of $61,500 is half its median home value, which is $123,100.
The ratio for Louisville is 39 percent. The median base salary is $54,000, and the median home value is $128,100. And Louisville has 22,693 open jobs, based on active job listings on Glassdoor as of Aug. 23, according to the report.
Indianapolis (with a cost-of-living ratio of 43 percent) and Cincinnati (40 percent) are among the cities ahead of us in the top 10.
One of the cities that didn’t make the list is San Francisco, where the median base salary is $88,000 and the median home value is $806,600. That works out to a cost-of-living ratio of 11 percent.
