The University of Louisville prepares aspiring educators to earn their MAT, gain Kentucky teacher certification, and build a foundation for long-term growth in the profession.

Alternative Certification Program

Program Overview

The University of Louisville’s Alternative Certification Program, housed in the Office of Educator Excellence within the College of Education & Human Development, provides a pathway into the teaching profession for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree. The two-year program allows candidates to earn provisional Kentucky teacher certification and teach full-time while completing coursework toward a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Through relevant, practice-based coursework, a cohort model, and a strong partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), the program prepares highly effective educators to meet the needs of today’s classrooms. Beyond preparing candidates to earn their MAT and Kentucky teacher certification, the Office of Educator Excellence works with each student to develop an individualized pathway for continued professional growth, including future graduate degrees, additional certification areas, and specialized endorsements that support long-term career advancement.

What Candidates Can Expect

From the moment candidates join the program, the Office of Educator Excellence is committed to their success. Candidates receive personalized advising, wrap-around support services, and the opportunity to learn alongside a collaborative cohort of future educators. Students may also benefit from scholarship opportunities and a 25% tuition reduction.

As part of the MAT program, candidates also can complete P–12 endorsement areas in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD), Moderate and Severe Disabilities (MSD), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Educational Technology. These additional credentials broaden candidates’ expertise across grade levels, increase their versatility as educators, and enhance their marketability to school districts seeking teachers with specialized knowledge and multiple certification areas.

Throughout the program, candidates build the knowledge, skills, and professional network needed to thrive as educators and make a lasting impact in Kentucky’s schools.
