Teach Kentucky’s First Recruiting Weekend for 2024: A Gateway to a Rewarding Teaching Career in Louisville

Teach Kentucky (TKY) recently concluded its first recruiting weekend for 2024, held from December 2-4, 2023. This event served as a platform for TKY to welcome a small yet exceptional group of eight candidates. These candidates, hailing from Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan, had the opportunity to interact with TKY staff, current teachers, and partner colleges of education and Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). The event aimed to provide vital information about the program, conduct interviews, and offer candidates a glimpse into their potential new home city.

Exploring Louisville
TKY’s president and founder, Rowan Claypool, led the out-of-town candidates on a city tour, showcasing popular areas such as NULU, Downtown, and Bardstown Road. The tour included stops at local favorites like Please and Thank You, renowned for their delectable chocolate chip cookies. This experience gave the candidates a taste of what their new home city had to offer.
Community Reception
The weekend concluded with a community reception attended by TKY board members, staff, teachers, JCPS administrators, and college of education partners. Community groups like the Young Professionals Association of Louisville, The City Champs, and Dress for Success also participated, providing valuable insights about the city and welcoming the candidates to their new community.
Two TKY teachers, Rebecca Rossi (2023 cohort) and Kathryn Santivasci (2019 cohort), shared their experiences during the reception. Kathryn spoke passionately about the importance of mental healthcare for educators, emphasizing how it has positively impacted her teaching career. Rebecca, in her first year of teaching, shared her journey of relocating, starting graduate school, and embarking on her career in education.
