March Recruitment Weekend Recap

The March Recruitment weekend for Teach Kentucky came to a close with a successful and inspiring event. This event welcomed 10 candidates from local and national backgrounds, representing various colleges such as Sarah Lawrence, Bellarmine University, Colorado College, Valparaiso College, Ohio State University, Louisiana Tech, University of Louisville, and University of Mississippi.
The new teacher candidates were treated to a city tour on Sunday morning, followed by a valuable interview preparation session conducted by some of our current teachers.
Teach Kentucky’s emphasis on building a strong community of educators was evident throughout the weekend. The willingness of current teachers to support and guide the next generation is a core principle of Teach Kentucky.
The community gathered at Monnik Beer Company on Sunday night, continuing the tradition of coming together. Special thanks were extended to Stock Yard Bank and Trust for their sponsorship, which made the event possible.
Guest Speakers
- Andy Stith: A representative from Americorps, an essential partner of Teach Kentucky, shared valuable insights.
- Jack Harrod: A sophomore from Bullit East Hig
- h School spoke about the crucial role teachers play in the lives of their students, emphasizing the impact of caring teachers both inside and outside the classroom.
- Kennita Ballard: An award-winning teacher at Grace James Academy, shared her inspiring journey from New York to Kentucky with Teach Kentucky. She encouraged new teachers to be open to the opportunities provided by Teach Kentucky, reflecting on her own successful path and numerous accomplishments over her 8 years in the community.
On Monday, candidates had the opportunity to tour Newburg Middle School and Seneca High School. They also participated in an integrated interview process, interacting with representatives from Teach Kentucky, Jefferson County Public Schools, and partners from the departments of education at the University of Louisville, Spalding, and Asbury.
The weekend was a resounding success, and Teach Kentucky eagerly anticipates welcoming these aspiring new teachers to Louisville and into the community of educators this summer. The organization is excited to witness their growth, inspiration, and success as they embark on their teaching careers with Teach Kentucky.
