Teach Kentucky recently concluded its January recruiting weekend, hosting a diverse group of 13 candidates with aspirations to become educators in various fields. The event was a great success, bringing together candidates from both local universities and those from out of state.
Candidate Overview
- Geographic Diversity: The 13 candidates included 9 local participants and 4 from Florida (2), Northern Indiana, and North Carolina.
- Educational Background: The candidates hailed from a range of universities showcasing a broad mix of academic backgrounds. including the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University, Campbellsville University, Centre College, Western Kentucky University, Purdue University, University of Arizona, Western Carolina University, Concordia College, Florida International University, University of Chicago, and Pontifical Catholic University of Chile
- Teaching Fields: The candidates are aspiring to become teachers in fields such as English as a Second Language, Social Studies, Math, Science, Special Education, and Elementary Education, reflecting a commitment to diverse areas of education.
Weekend Highlights
The weekend commenced with a delicious dinner at Mission BBQ, providing an opportunity for the candidates to interact with the TKY staff. These recruiting weekends serve as a platform for building a strong cohort and fostering enduring friendships. The discussions centered around career goals, graduate school prospects, and the prospect of building a life in Louisville.
Founder and President, Rowan Claypool, provided out-of-town candidates with a brief tour of the city, showcasing prominent landmarks such as the U of L campus, downtown, NULU, Lynn Stadium, YUM! Center, the iconic Louisville Slugger, and the Big Four Bridge, just to name a few. The candidates were pleasantly surprised by the diversity and vibrancy of Louisville, expressing their enthusiasm for the city’s offerings and affordability. This excitement was palpable as they looked forward to embarking on their teaching careers with Teach Kentucky this summer.
The weekend culminated in the traditional Community Reception on Sunday night, where the candidates were introduced to members of the TKY community who will form part of their support system. The event featured speakers such as Andrew Stith from AmeriCorps, first-year teacher Janice Dean, and veteran teacher Kelly O’Riley, offering valuable insights and inspiration to the candidates.
Monday saw the candidates visiting Newburg Middle School and Seneca High School, followed by interviews with representatives from JCPS and partner colleges of education, including the University of Louisville, Spalding, and Asbery.
Financial Support and Opportunities
Teach Kentucky understands the significance of relocating to a new city and commencing a graduate program, and is committed to easing the financial burden for its new teachers. The organization offers a range of financial benefits, including:
- $2,500 Summer Institute/Relocation Grant
- Up to $4,000 Relocation Grant from the School District
- $14,000 AmeriCorps Grant toward Master’s Degree
- $47,000+ Immediate Starting Salary
- A pathway to earn $20,000 in raises over the first 5 years
