During the 2016-2017 school year, veteran teacher Paul Barnwell led a hybrid, project-based learning course in JCPS called What’s the Story? Louisville Youth Community Wellness Advocates (WtSL). Students from Fern Creek and duPont Manual High School spent the year researching projects on community health and wellness topics of their choosing. All class gatherings were held outside of regular school hours. The course culminated in a night of student presentations on their topics.
WtSL is unique to JCPS coursework because it provides students the opportunity to participate in “Deeper Learning.” The concept of Deeper Learning encompasses the ideas of adopting a “broader definition of learning” and reducing “reliance on standardized, multiple-choice tests,” among other aims.
In a recent Courier Journal article, Barnwell promotes furthering Deeper Learning initiatives in JCPS. You can read it here.
