Louisville is praised for its high quality water, delivered to over 850,000 residents for 156 years by the Louisville Water Company. A lesser known fact is the abundance of educational science resources that the company also provides to the community.

A Community Partnership

In 2016, The Louisville Water Company partnered with local Louisville nonprofit Teach Kentucky to share and distribute science curriculum resources inside regional public middle and high schools. Teach Kentucky recruits educators from across the nation to teach in the Louisville region. This new collaboration harnesses the expertise of a reputable local corporation with the teacher talent recruited by a local nonprofit organization.

Aligning with Common Core Standards

The partnership could not come at a better time, as the state of Kentucky recently adopted Common Core curriculum standards that include a comprehensive unit on water. Teach Kentucky’s science educators recently toured the Louisville Water Tower and WaterWorks Museum to learn more about the resources available to them through the Louisville Water Company. They were impressed with the offerings and are excited to incorporate them into their classrooms.

Jessie Newhouse, a science teacher at Southern High School, said, “We spend hours and hours and hours talking about how plants, animals, and our ecosystem work together, especially about the water quality.”

Learning More About Louisville’s Water Systems

The Louisville Water Company also invites educators and their students to visit its historic grounds and WaterWorks Museum. They provide facility tours that give an up-close look of its operations, the long history of the company, and the importance of maintaining a safe and sustainable water system for the public good.

Virginia Diaz, a chemistry teacher at duPont Manual, says, “It would be great to bring students here so that they can see first hand how the process works, because as a chemistry teachers we have a lot of discussions about water purification and even how to purify different mixtures.”

Louisville Water Company representatives have already scheduled time to join Teach Kentucky educators in their classrooms this fall, and will continue the collaboration in spring 2017. Both partners are thrilled for this opportunity, and can’t wait to see the impact that making real-life connections to science curriculum will have on the region’s public school students.

The accompanying video highlights this important partnership.
